How to Draw a Monkey
There are various kinds of monkeys, but chimpanzee and orangutan are most similar looking to a man. Orangutan is even as tall as a man, but is much stronger. Most often we may see chimpanzees "at work" in a circus or a zoo, and sometimes in a photo studio. Let's try to draw a monkey gorilla.
It is unlikely that you would have a chance to draw a monkey by looking at it in real life, so you can simply refer to a picture. As with other animal drawings on this site, the step-by-step drawings provided here should help you draw a chimpanzee.
Step 1
In order to draw a monkey in steps, let's first outline its body and head. To do that, first draw two ovals and one circle for monkey's body and a smaller circle for its head.
Step 2
Draw an even smaller oval inside the top part of the head's contour. We will focus only on its top part in order to draw a monkey's snout correctly.
The monkey in the picture stands on four legs; therefore, outline the forelegs and hind legs in a standing position.
Step 3
To make drawing legs and feet easier, it helps to draw small circles for joints. Visually, this technique helps you determine the right thickness of paws and their shape. But now it does not necessarily apply. Draw paws of standing monkey gorilla is easy.
While at this point it is hard to imagine how to draw a monkey from all these circles and ovals, let's carry on.
Step 4
Make sure to check all proportions of a chimpanzee's body in your drawing. Front and hind paws should be of similar thickness and the gorilla's head should be sized appropriately in relation to the body. If proportions in the picture are correct, then let's bring out drawing of a chimpanzee to life. To begin, go over the initial body contours with pencil so that the monkey's body would take a definite form.
Now you can erase extra lines where the contour lines crisscross.
Step 5
At this step you should erase all extra lines from the drawing of a monkey. Add monkey fingers and eyes and you will see that the drawing is almost finished. The only thing that remains is to draw the monkey's snout.
It is not easy to draw a monkey but it is way harder to draw the snout. You may not get it right the first time, so practice a few times. At this point, make sure not to press too hard on a pencil so that you can easily erase and correct the lines later on. A monkey has pretty unusual shape of the nose; if you manage to draw it well, it becomes easier to draw its eyes and mouth. It is difficult to describe in words how to draw a monkey, so try to remember to refer to my drawing each step of the way.
Step 6
Now you have to shade in the drawing of a monkey using # 2 pencil or color it with crayons. If you lack experience, it may be good idea not to use paint yet. In fact, lead pencil strokes could be a great way to shade in a monkey's fur. Chimpanzee's fur is black and its palms and feet are red.
Step 7
I hope this lesson on "how to draw a monkey" helped you draw a perfect gorilla!
